The women started their league season this past weekend against the Denver Black Ice in Denver. From the very beginning of warm-ups the women were on a mission to make sure the rest of the CR2 was on notice that we were coming with “intensity, integrity and heart” to play no matter how far the travel. The intensity continued onto the pitch with a beautiful vintage Detroit women’s game. We maintained our integrity by having only 4 penalties against during the game. The heart came from not letting the emotions of long travel days get to us when the first whistle blew.
After receiving the opening kickoff we immediately went to work and dominated the first 35 minutes scoring several beautiful tries with running and support play. The Black Ice did not know what hit them and had to play off the back of their heels however, in the last 5 minutes the Black Ice kept the ball in the forwards and crashed their way to a try. With the second half beginning the women bounced back and put the pedal to the metal and continued to dominate the next 40 minutes of play. The mixture of tight forward pounding and backs going wide with support proved too much for the Black Ice as the women came away with a 48-5 victory.
Women of the match: Bubble Gum for Denver (dwrfc alumnus) Erin for Detroit
Can we get 3 cheers for the new players and stepping onto the field and showing that they are a part of the family. Wong starting at scrumhalf showing off her talent at the position and her ability to stop on a dime and break everyone’s ankles as she touched down a try or 2. Kadie starting at prop and dominating her side and being there for every banger and ruck. Delayne starting at 2nd row and growing as a player in her second match ever. Emily for making the trip and learning what it is we actually do during the B side match. Also, the second season players of Martinez, Mindy, Elizabeth and Rene continued their growth into the women’s level of play. Hip Hip Hooray!!
Can we get 3 cheers for the veterans switching positions and showing why we are a versatile team. Sars switched to outside and Karly went back to the inside proving once again that they are a dominate center duo. Opie moving back to being a badass flanker and helping keep the forwards motivated to run in the thin air of Denver. Shaunna at 8 man and just continuing to do what it is that she does best, aka create havoc. Mustard moved to the hooker position and never lost a ball and stole a couple of theirs. Golden getting off her retired bum and coming back to solidify the winger position with her Favre like presence. Hip Hip Hooray!!
Can we get 3 cheers for the entire team aka my family. It was because we played as one cohesive unit that we walked away victorious and made the long trip worth the effort. I can never imagine playing with anyone but Detroit and I enjoy every minute I spend with all of you. Hip Hip Hooray!!!
Cheers,
Erin McGowan
